General Class License
The General class license is the intermediate level in the Amateur Radio Service.  It requires some knowledge of electrical theory as well as rules and regulations.  The exam is a written, multiple-choice test consisting of 35 questions.  Passing a 5-WPM Morse Code Exam is required.  These do not need to be done simultaneously.  You can pass either test first and receive credit for it for later (Written Exam=1 year credit, Morse Code=Lifetime credit).

Generals have access to the VHF (Very High Frequency) and UHF (Ultra High Frequency) areas of the spectrum that Technicians have as well as a large section of the Shortwave (HF) Bands.  These bands allow longer distance communications and Generals may use power up to 1500 watts as required.

Generals may use AM, FM, Single Sideband (SSB), CW (Morse Code), and digital modes of communication as well as Amateur Television (including Slow Scan) in their allotted bands.
