Technician Class
License
The
Technician class license is the entry level to the Amateur Radio Service.
It requires a little knowledge of electrical theory as well as rules and
regulations. The exam is a written, multiple-choice test consisting of 35
questions from a pool of 350 questions. No Morse Code knowledge is
required.
Technicians have access to the VHF (Very High Frequency) and
UHF (Ultra High Frequency) areas of the spectrum. These bands allow mostly
local communications both directly (Simplex) or through a Repeater (a radio
on a high building or mountain designed to retransmit your signal over a
wider area than you can cover from the ground). This allows simple
communication over a very large area using simple handheld radios running very
low power.
Technicians may use AM, FM, Single Sideband (SSB), CW
(Morse Code), and digital modes of communication as well as Amateur Television
in their allotted bands. Through the use of Internet-connected Voice Over
IP systems, Technicians may communicate with hams all over the
world.
